How to Turn a Child’s Halloween Drawing into Pen Plotter Art with iDraw H SE

Halloween Pen Plotter Art with iDraw H SE & Inkscape

Halloween is an ideal time for a creative family art project. A child’s Halloween sketch does not have to remain on a single sheet of paper—you can transform it into colorful Halloween Pen Plotter Art with an iDraw H SE Preassembled Pen Plotter and Inkscape.

This project combines an original child-created drawing with digital tracing, layered coloring, and precision pen plotting. The finished piece keeps the character of the hand-drawn artwork while adding the clean and precise results of a pen plotter.

Step 1: Have Your Child Draw a Halloween Picture

Begin with the most personal part of the project: the original artwork.

Ask your child to create a Halloween-themed drawing on paper. They can draw pumpkins, ghosts, bats, witches, monsters, or any other Halloween elements they want.

The purpose is to keep the personality of the original drawing instead of making it perfectly symmetrical or digitally polished.

Step 2: Photograph the Artwork and Bring It into Inkscape

After the drawing is complete, take a clear photo of it.

Open Inkscape and import the photograph into your document. Try to capture the paper directly from above to minimize distortion in the drawing.

The imported image will serve as the reference for creating the paths that the iDraw H SE Pen Plotter will later draw.

Step 3: Build a Path with the Pen Tool

In Inkscape, select the Pen Tool and choose Create BSpline path.

Begin by tracing a small section of the Halloween artwork's outline.

Under Fill and Stroke, use the following settings:

  • Fill: No paint
  • Stroke: Flat color

This produces a visible path that can be used to follow the original drawing.

Step 4: Trace the Artwork Using Smooth Curves

Continue following the Halloween drawing with smooth curves.

To keep the project organized, you can create separate layers and name them using numbers. These numbered layers will later determine the sequence in which the different colors are plotted.

The number of points used during tracing also affects the final appearance. More points generally allow the path to follow the original drawing more closely, while fewer points can produce a simpler version of the artwork.

When tracing curves and important details, work carefully so the final paths retain the look of the original drawing.

Step 5: Set Up Multiple Layers and Apply Hatch Fill

In this example, the artwork is divided into four different layers. Layers 1 and 2 require color filling, while the remaining layers are used for line drawing.

Start by selecting the path on Layer 1.

Go to:

Extensions > iDraw Utilities > Hatch fill

Configure the Hatch Fill settings based on your project.

Choose the line width according to the diameter of the pen tip you are using. You can also change the fill angle to achieve the appearance you want.

Once the settings are ready, click Apply.

Step 6: Add Hatch Fill to Layer 2

Repeat the same procedure for Layer 2.

Select the path on Layer 2 and open:

Extensions > iDraw Utilities > Hatch fill

Adjust the settings according to the pen you intend to use, then apply the hatch fill.

At this stage, the artwork should have four separate layers. The first two layers contain color-filled areas, while the remaining layers are used for line-based details.

Apply Hatch Fill to the Second Layer

Step 7: Install the Paper and Pen on the iDraw H SE

Next, prepare the iDraw H SE Preassembled Pen Plotter for plotting.

Install the paper and pen on the machine.

In Inkscape, click Extensions and select the corresponding iDraw plugin. For this example, the HSE Control plugin is used.

If the required plugin has not been installed, follow the installation tutorial:

Step 8: Plot the Artwork One Layer at a Time

Open the control interface and get ready to plot the artwork layer by layer.

Install the pen color required for Layer 1.

Then select Layers in the control interface.

The layer numbers represent the plotting order:

  • 1 = Layer 1
  • 2 = Layer 2
  • 3 = Layer 3
  • 4 = Layer 4

Before starting each plotting process, select the corresponding layer number.

Step 9: Switch Pen Colors and Finish the Layers

Once Layer 1 has completed, install the pen required for Layer 2.

Return to Layers, change the selected layer number to Layer 2, and begin plotting.

Repeat the same workflow for Layer 3 and then Layer 4.

Whenever you change the pen, make sure to:

  1. Install the correct pen color.
  2. Open the Layers option.
  3. Select the matching layer number.
  4. Start the plotting process.

Using multiple pen colors and separate layers allows the iDraw H SE Pen Plotter to reproduce the original Halloween artwork with both detailed lines and colored areas.

The completed result can closely resemble the original hand-drawn artwork, making the machine-plotted version look remarkably similar to the human-created design.

Final Result

This project provides a simple way to transform a child’s Halloween drawing into personalized Halloween Pen Plotter Art.

The workflow is straightforward: begin with a hand-drawn Halloween picture, trace it in Inkscape, divide the artwork into layers, apply hatch fills where necessary, and use different pen colors to plot each layer with the iDraw H SE Preassembled Pen Plotter.

Combining a child’s creativity with Inkscape’s vector tools and multi-color pen plotting makes it possible to turn a simple Halloween drawing into finished artwork that can be displayed, gifted, or preserved as a creative memory.
